A module on identifying the symptoms, complications, and severity of alcohol withdrawal, and the management of patients, including nutritional support, pharmacotherapy, and discharge planning.

Learning outcomes

After completing this module, you should:

  • Be able to identify patients with or at risk of alcohol withdrawal
  • Understand the causes and presentation of delirium tremens and Wernicke's encephalopathy
  • Be able to use assessment tools for staging and monitoring alcohol withdrawal
  • Recognise complications of alcohol withdrawal
  • Be able to treat the common symptoms and complications of alcohol withdrawal.
